Robseal Roofing Claim 100% NVQ Success

It’s 100% all the way for Robseal Roofing’s single ply division. 100% of all Foreman/fixers are now qualified, 100% of all installers are either qualified or registered and 100% of trainees are committed to the NVQ scheme as part of their ‘apprenticeship’ obligations.

Today, Robseal is one of the leading and most respected installers of Industrial and Commercial flat roof systems in the South of England. They are confident that they will be the first major roofing contractor to be able to claim such a comprehensive training achievement.

Brain Middlemiss (L) congratulates Robseal Foreman Andy Coles on his team becoming 100% NVQ committed.

At the very beginning, a Robseal Director sat on the original NVQ steering committee to make recommendations to Government. It was their belief, at that time, that an ‘apprenticeship scheme’ approach would be the way forward. Then, in 1997

when Robseal’s previously sub-contract labour were taken onto PAYE and the need for a properly trained labour force became self evident, Robseal established an ‘in house’ facility using their own NVQ ‘apprenticeship’ style of training.

In 1997 Robseal took on six gangs from sub-contract to PAYE labour - today there are 21. The Trainee ‘apprenticeship scheme’ is wholly welcomed by all trainees, and for many, to have their NVQ certificate proudly displayed on the Robseal ‘Wall of Achievement’ is in itself a goal worth striving for.

Crawley Court - major roof refurbishment comes in 3 weeks ahead of schedule

Crawley Court houses the main teleport facilities for Arqiva (which used to be previously NTL) which includes their satellite access, global distributions and direct-to-home broadcasting. To provide a complete 4500m2 roof refurbishment program with no disturbance to the employees or Arqiva’s operations presents a major challenge for the most accomplished roofing company.

To add a degree of complexity, the project also called for complete overhaul of air handling plant, installation of guard rails, and, redecoration of roof top plant rooms. Robseal was called in at design stage to carry out an comprehensive assessment of all system options and to provide all necessary system design and existing roof tests. Robseal subsequently won the contract in competitive tender and accepted a 16 weeks deadline for the work.

The system installed was a fully adhered light grey single ply over a 95mm insulation using the existing felt surface as a vapour control layer. The finished project needed to meet the very high aesthetic demands of both the client and the managing surveyors - this it has certainly achieved, and, was delivered three weeks ahead of the deadline.

Mike Elliot, Facilities Manager of Arqiva said “Robseal have provided a first class service, helping us through design, and worked closely with us in ensuring all work was carried out on time and to the highest standards. I would have no problem in recommending Robseal for work on similar projects.”

SpectraPlan single ply TPE membrane

New products now on site

The large roof pictured here is one of our first large installations of this impressive membrane. TPE performs in the same way as traditional PVCs but differs in both its fundamental constituents and the process by which it is manufactured.

A primary claim of SpectraPlan is that it is manufactured using no harmful bromides or halogens and is fully recyclable at the end of its very long, useful, life.

Robseal is now a registered installer of SpectraRoof products and is optimistic that it will make a very positive contribution to their single ply division.

IN THE PIPELINE: Hydrotech Structural Waterproofing. The Hydrotech System consists of two coats of hot melt rubberised bitumen, squeegee applied, with polyester fabric reinforced between. The membrane is laid on to surface conditioned concrete and is protected by a Hydrogard protection layer.

This is quite unique system and Robseal is privileged to have been targeted to become an approved installer. This system has benefits for many projects, in particular heavily trafficked areas on concrete roofs, where it is anticipated that the system will last the lifetime of the building.
