Hot Melt is experiencing somewhat of a revival these days. It is a bituminous product, not dissimilar in many ways to asphalt in application, but it never takes a 'solid' form.
The product is melted on site and applied in two coats to the roof deck with a reinforcing membrane between the two layers. Insulation is usually bonded on top and finished with a layer of high performance elastomeric felt. It is also usual then to protect with paviors or ballast.
A unique property of hot melt is that, if ever punctured, it will 'heal' itself by virtue of its non-solid state.
